Sydney June Meetup - Socialized!

June 15, 2009 - 04:48

Sydney June Meetup - Socialized!

Keeping with our schedule of the 3rd thursday of each month, we'll be having our regular meetup on this Thursday, June 18th. This meetup will have a change of venue and will be an experiment for more social events for the community. (Next month is July 16th)

The last monthly meetup went really well as usual. We experimented with a barcamp style session which got good feedback. The turn out was a bit smaller than usual (probably do to a late announcement on my part) but we had another really great support session. Thanks again to the people who stepped up barcamp style.

This month we'll be at the Royal Exhibition Hotel and we'll be aiming for a social pub experience. I'm still working to see if we can get a projector setup. If so, look for us upstairs otherwise we'll position ourselves in the back area where we can pool some tables together. Look for laptops, drupal schwag, and lots of talking! We'll also be running the support sessions again, since that seems to be a popular segment so bring your laptop!

Sign Up!
When: Thursday, June 18th
Time: 6:45pm - 9:30pm
Venue: Royal Exhibition Hotel
86 Chalmers St, Surry Hills, NSW 2010, Australia
(02) 9698 2607 ( Map)

Venue Details

This is the same pub that we used to meet at over a year ago. I don't remember the parking situation, but its so close to central station you could likely use the same parking from the ABC centre and walk over if really necessary.

Agenda:
  • Greetings and Welcome new people + Announcements
  • Community News by: Ryan Cross
    A regular addition to the agenda, this will cover monthly news in the community and around Drupal. We can also have another presentation if the projector situation works out well
  • Session: Live Support
    We will be delivering a live support session for all levels of Drupal experience. Remember when you first got started? - Everyone has been there and can help someone else climb the Drupal learning curve, wherever your current experience provides. Please come prepared with questions or answers, laptops and your Drupal experience! Unfortunately, we can't guarantee internet access.
  • No need to move! - stay till late at the pub with Drinks/food

Remember to sign up, this will also help us plan numbers/audience.

Next Month (July 16th):
- Image Cache and handling by James Gollan
- Best practices for upgrading by Ryan Cross
Future Presentations:
- See http://groups.drupal.org/node/15140
- What can you present on?

Post below if you can talk about something (anything is ok, everyone has something to share) or if you're are interested in other topics for discussion.

Ottawa August Meetup | Theme: Drupal 7 Patchfest (Getting Into Core)

June 13, 2009 - 18:35

In honor of the Drupal 7 feature freeze in September we're focusing the theme for this meetup on D7 patches.

I'm hoping that everyone will come with a laptop with the CVS version of D7 installed locally. Now most of us don't work from this version of Drupal, so I've posted a screencast:
http://blip.tv/file/187741/

The links to the main CVS page in the handbook (the navigation has changed since the video):
http://drupal.org/handbook/cvs

A link to another text install about how to do this:
http://awebfactory.com.ar/node/369

As well as the main guide for installing from the CVS:
http://drupal.org/node/320

Would be good to have us all with this level of install so that we can start looking at the thousands of issues that are outstanding in Drupal.org that we can begin to look at & hopefully get into core.

If please post questions here if you've got problems and take some time in July to help work through the installation so we'll be ready for August.

As of June 13th there are:
- 320 Pending bugs (D7)
- 293 Critical issues (D7)
- 1515 Patch queue (D7)
- 94 Patches to review (D7)

There are also lists of Performance issues, Usability issues, Fields in Core issues and Accessibility issues to look at.

The issues have been tagged so it is possible to review them. You can even see ones tagged as Dries' Favourites

This is evening will hopefully get more developers in Ottawa familiar with using Drupal 7, contributing code suggestions to issues that affect us all and help us all have better tools to work with in 2010.

Wirespeak has again offered up their office in the ByWard Market (78 George St, Suite 2) and hopefully the weather will be nice enough to head out to a patio afterward. If a lot of people sign up for this meet up we may need to look at moving to a larger venue, so keep watching this space!

Please sign up for this event.

Hope to see you there.

NCTech4Good - Overview and experiences with content management systems

June 13, 2009 - 13:15

Just wanted to post this event that I found out about through the Triangle LINUX Users Group

Sean Watson, netCorps, Technology Consultant, will provide a general overview of several of the popular content management systems and will lead a discussion of the pros/cons of each. Participants will:

  1. Gain an understanding of when a CMS is better than a custom built/custom programmed static website and when it's not.

  2. Gain an understanding of why a proprietary hosted CMS solution is not usually a good idea.

  3. Gain an understanding of the issues regarding hosting user-owned CMSs such as Plone and Drupal.

  4. Gain an understanding of what is involved in choosing an effective system for their specific needs.

  5. Participate in activities to help you begin identifying specific needs/requirements.

Pizza (sponsored by NTEN & RTPNet) and socializing starting at 6:30, program at 7:00. Donations are welcome but not required.

United Way of the Greater Triangle is now located at 2400 Perimeter Park Drive.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Austin Meetup on Wed, 6/24/09, 7 pm @ UT ACT Lab

June 12, 2009 - 16:25
What

It's time for another Austin Drupal Users Group Meetup! This month, Lauren Roth has invited us to join forces with the Austin Drupal Meetup Group from meetup.com and try a new venue, the UT ACT Lab.

From the meetup.com announcement:

Elegant Functionality Requires More Than Hacking Bluemarine

One of the greatest benefits of a Content Management System like Drupal, is the ability to separate the visual presentation (Theme) layer from the site logic. This is accomplished by placing your theme files in site/all/themes. The rest is up to your abilities to write & edit PHP template files, use hooks, and customize CSS for use in customizing the presentation of your site. The callbacks may seem a bit labyrinthine, but by making a sub-theme you can get well on your way.

Sound tough? It is not.

Come out next Month to learn how to get started! Lauren N. Roth will be giving short presentation to get you going and recommends bringing a Localhost installation on your own computer. Even if you are an experienced Drupal developer, write modules, and have been pimping out sites for years, let's get together, discuss best practices and demystify the design process. If you write modules, some themer needs to handle your output after they enable your module, so it would be fantastic to build a little elegance into the module itself!

Come out, ask questions, share your experiences and help others make some amazing Drupal sites!

DrupalJam, de toekomst zekerstellen

June 11, 2009 - 14:49

The VVC's Web Design & Development Association (VVCWDDA) is an organization devoted towards the advancement of knowledge, skill, and expertise of web technologies in the High Desert community. Our focus is to introduce and discuss practical concepts and techniques in the development of websites, provide a platform to network and share knowledge with other web enthusiasts, impart consultation onto local businesses, and present opportunity for work experience to those interested. We meet on the second and last Wednesday of each month discussing both aspects of web design and web development, respectively. Meetings are generally held in the Student Activity Center, Floor 2 at the Victor Valley College.

This week's session is on...

Free Food!

Consumption: Yes, it is the end of VVC's Spring semester, and we're pretty much all burned out and struggling through finals. So instead of a formal discussion we're just gonna get together and indulge ourselves with pizza or whatever. Free food, free wifi, what more can you ask for??

Location

Our meetings start at 6:00PM and are generally held at Victor Valley College in the Student Activity Center, Floor 2. This week our group will meet in the Quiet Room. There is a small $2.00 parking fee for non-student attendees, so make sure you bring extra quarters!

Smaller Indiana Bigger Ideas Wed June 24th 1pm-5pm $Name your own ticket price$

June 9, 2009 - 11:27

http://info.smallerindiana.com/bigger-ideas/index.html

Hey Gang,
There is a rather interesting event coming up in a few weeks that I wanted to make you aware of.
Smaller Indiana is a group I belong to at www.smallerindiana.com It is put together by Pat Coyle and runs on the NING platform. By the way. The Ning social publishing platform is quite nice. What Pat has done with it is truly amazing.

Smaller Indiana had the idea some time ago to do an event titled, "Smaller Indiana, Bigger Ideas." The event is taking place Wednesday June24th from 1pm to 5pm in The Athenæum Theatre 401 E Michigan [where I used to be the audio engineer] A number of the attendees and speakers will be heading downstairs to the Rathskeller afterward to socialize.

Why am I going?
Those of you who know me know that I am not one to attend the Ra Ra Ra events where we're told to Go Out & Get Your Dream Realized, etc. I have been to those and while they are interesting they are not practical. Nor do I necessarily want to hear how someone go on and on about ho w they worked hard all there life and went from poverty to being a PhD in Astro Physics.
What I do like about the Smaller Indiana, Bigger Ideas event is that:
a] You can name your own price to attend. http://smallerindiana.com/profiles/blogs/set-your-own-ticket-price-for
b] Across the 4 hours I will hear many different kinds of speakers from different backgrounds with different messages. These people have something to say about BIG IDEAS and the role those ideas have had in their lives.
c] I expect to meet some fascinating people there. The "Guest List" published on the site, has some heavy hitters on it. While this is NOT the typical Networking Event, there will be opportunities for networking and if you know me, you know that I make time for networking!
d] IDEAS IDEAS IDEAS. I am full of ideas right now. I have spoken with many of you and I hear your ideas as well. I want to listen to the speakers and the attendees and the guests and hear what happened to their ideas. Look at the speaker list and tell me if you would listen to this guy or gal if you were standing in a long line at the bank. I know I would. I especially like the wrap-up at the end where John Ketzenberger: Business Columnists, Indianapolis Star will moderate a panel discussion among many of the speakers talking about what all was said. Check out the speaker list at http://info.smallerindiana.com/bigger-ideas/speakers.html

As mentioned. Smaller Indiana knows that times are tough and rather than have a 1/2 filled hall they have opened up seats for "Name Your Own Price." That's pretty cool actually. I may have to use that one some day for an event that I produce!

I am going, please register as attending to this event post even if you think you are going. I'd LOVE to see a discussion about some the speakers.
2008 ROCKED for me and my livelihood, my skill sets, my family etc. I am looking forward to getting OUT of my own bubble and listening to others talk about their ideas and experiences. Seriously. I am anxious to gain some new perspectives on what people are doing or have done.

Will you join me?

Drupal booth at Open Source World

June 8, 2009 - 21:22

Drupal has been chosen to present in the open source pavilion at Open Source World. The spaces were limited so we are really excited to have been granted a booth. We have a strong community in the Bay Area, and would appreciate having people staff the booth to answer questions. We often need upwards of 6 people at the booth to answer questions during the rushes.

You can volunteer for different time slots, but we should have more people at the opening of the show and during the busy periods.

Meetup and Presentation

June 8, 2009 - 21:10

OK, so we are overdue for another meetup. To make up for this, we have two great community presentations lined up. Two people have so far volunteered to present so that this week we'll have Nesta's talk on how to do theme overrides in Drupal and next week Yannick (axle_foley00) has offered to present on multisites.

So this week Nesta will lead us through theme overrides with "Overriding HTML output in Drupal" (extremely useful stuff). Here's an outline of the talk:

Aim: Should be able to:
1. Locate overridable output
2. Override HTML using
* Functions - template.php
* Template files - *.tpl.php
3. Understanding rendering hierarchy

Intro:
* Structure of a Drupal theme
* Info files?
* template.php
* Theme registrty

Body:
* Finding themeable output
- theme functions (theme_)
- preprocess functions (template_preprocess_)
- theme file (.tpl.php)
- or just use the devel module's theme developer functionality
* Overriding theme or template preprocess function
* Overriding a theme file
* Converting from functions to templates
- getting the correct file name
- variables
* Forms?
* CSS Only themes?

Examples.
Tips.
Summary.

So overall the Agenda for the event is as follows:

  1. First 15 min to half hour: introductions
    * Who are you?
    * What brings you here?
    * What do you do?
    * How do you use Drupal?
    * What are your websites, what companies do you work for?
    * Generally catching up.

  2. Presentation: "Overriding HTML output in Drupal"
    * Use cases and examples
    * Q and A on the presentation

  3. Group discussion
    * Anyone want to show off their multisite install?
    * Any projects or problems people have found and need help on?
    * Working on any interesting projects?
    * Want to share best practices when building Drupal sites?

So I hope to see you all on Saturday at UWI. 2pm sharp I will post further details of the venue later this week.
