need a Step-by-step tutorial of using panels and views

Hello, I am near to give up and continue with my php+mysql website.
I am trying to get a 3 columns, header+footer frontpage with some content and don't know how it is done.
Is there any step-by-step tutorial?
I don;t know about a panels
