It would be absolutely wonderful if there was a way to create nodes that didn't already exist when typing into the a node_reference field.

Example:
* On a Quote content type with a node_reference to an Author
* User should be able to type in an author that doesn't already exist and have that node created automatically

This is completely new functionality, which is covered in D6 by an other module, and will be best covered in D7 by a next-gen module: References is really about maintaining functionality similar to D6 nodereference/userreference in D7, not introducing new features.

I'm inclined to "won't fix".

Postponing: no new features until at least a stable release, and there are already two next-gen modules: nodeconnect mentionned above, and Relation.
