Would it be possible to have a node action "mark as no new content available" so when one makes a redirect one can mark the node from which one redirects as read? At the moment this can be done by a VBO action I think, but that would be a bit of load I think.

If entity api wraps around this comment property (though I believe it is user specific) then that may provide the integration you're looking for.
