Affiliates earning commission on all future sales?

I've just installed this module, but my question is does the referred visitor have to sign up in order for the affiliate to be credited with a sale. I only ask because i'm planning on adding a few products to my site and allow affiliates to promote them. The thing is, if I create a product and a member that registered under another members affiliate ID purchases it, would the affiliate be credited with all future sales that this member made?
The reason I ask this is because let's say I created a paid membership feature in the future. When I try and sell this membership, the affiliate will be earning commission for referring the user to the site maybe 6 months, 1 year or more in the past. So is it possible for affiliates to only earn commission on sales on products through their affiliate ID and not from all members that have simply joined the site under the affiliate.
I also saw on the "to-do" list about Affiliates earning commissions based on sales to referred users. I think this would be what i'm looking for?

i'm also anxious for this commission feature. it's key for the success of this module (I think).
My site sells tangible goods so I'd like some sort of flexibility where the affiliate would automatically get free product or even a gift certificate that they can redeem. Example, for every $100 of sales their referrals purchase, they get a free item (it's a $10 item) sent to them (system enters an order at zero cost automatically) or it creates a $10 gift cert and emails the affiliate the code so they can redeem it.
That's my wish!
