Just wondering if the dev version is stable enough for a live site? And if it includes any major improvements over the recommended release?

Look through the issue queue and see if there's anything that troubles you. If not, then it should be stable for you. Then you can look at View CVS messages to see what's been done since the last release. (Hint, dev's created on 2010-Jul-11 were not "real.")
