Is it really necessary to limit max population to 1 if nodeprofile is enabled for a node-type?
I'd like to allow multiple nodes of the same type for the user's profile.

yeah it is.
However you can make every content-type (with an higher population) to belong to the nodeprofile type by creating a nodefamily relation for it. Read the nodeprofile instructions in the README for multiple content types.
