When using the language icons module I see the following html within the link to a translated node:

Only local images are allowed.

See the attached screen shot as well.

Icon placement is set to "Replace link" on the settings form.

This is a side-effect of #1005144: Doesn't differentiate between node and language switcher blocks. Thanks for the report. :)
