We haven't considered replacing core profile yet. If we were, the alternative would (most likely) be content profile.

Just stumbled on this and wanted to mention that your answer doesn't really make sense as you can use APK with either core or content profile, though content profile is preferred and will have more out of the box functionality.

That said, there's really not much sense in including APK in Drupal Commons as there really isn't much in APK that you can't do in Page Manager / Panels directly so it makes more sense for DC to take that route.
