In the D6 version we add a link to admin_menu. In Drupal 7, likely we should interact with the toolbar instead.

I'm not sure if this correct. I created a subscription via 30 day trial, then removed it on acquia.com and then saw this.
(This is not an issue of this patch this is just about if expired(removed) subscription considered active.)

Maybe you did not run cron? There could be a lag in that way.
