I thought for sure that this issue would be resolved by Drupal 7's release date, but it seems not to be the case. CCK filefields and imagefields don't have a working upgrade path to the Field API. It's been promised, but it hasn't happened yet. Since most installations rely heavily on the product images that Ubercart creates, we've had to postpone the release of Ubercart 3. Hopefully I can help make this occur sooner.

Subscribing. #781088: Updating CCK Fields and Data from D6 to D7 is the issue to track for filefield/imagefield upgrades.

It seems like all of the related field and CCK issues have been fixed. It seems like the proper way to restore the lost files is with Content Migrate. This is the kind of thing where I don't want to be the only person to test it out, and we also ought to put some kind of documentation in the update process.
