It would make editing of a panel much easier if at the top of the panel it would show an 'Edit' link such as the ones on Nodes.

Just seeing if anyone else would find that useful, I might make a patch if people agree.

although I'm using 4.7.4
right now the edit panel is only 1 inch across, which is very hard to edit

I like this idea a lot too. The views module has also done this.

The Panels 2.x line has this feature. Panels 1.x will not be getting new features unlesss someone steps up to maintain this line.
