During our project we made use of several hook updates to migrate functionality from dev > staging > production. We used update api module as a basis. We extended the module with more useful functions.
I like to contribute back the work we did. Probably some more functions will follow.

The patch from #0 is generated from the Eclipse and includes project paths I needed to modify the patch before apply. So here is the fresh reroll which should apply cleanly now.
