Hard to imagine this is really broken - so maybe i am just missing something???

Whenever i go to a flexinode node my breadcrumb is simply "home >> content" - which is of course incorrect.

I had this on a 4.6 site which i upgraded to 4.7 and it is still the case.

is this really the expected behaviour?

Yes. it is the way ANY node in Drupal works. flexinode does not change any breadcrumbs.
