The book Drupal 7 Module Development has a full chapter on the Node Access subsystem. Ken Rickard wrote it, making it quite authoritative, and I think the Node Access subsystem should be reviewed in light of this chapter.

So, I'll add to my personal wishlist, I don't have the book (mm, makes me think, why don't I have any Drupal books already published?).. Untill I get a copy of the book, Who wants to take this issue?
