One important thing to look into is a rewrite (which would be good for D6 too) so the system uses theme() instead of immediately building the HTML code.
Also, much better support of large taxonomies is required by implementing a CRON version that generates entries as required so they are ready to be displayed.
Well... you take the latest 1.x-dev and make it work in Drupal 7, then you post a tarball here so others can test. If it works for them, we can make it a version in the Drupal CVS/git and I can make you a co-maintainer of the module so you can yourself handle the CVS and new versions for D7.
I guess that Taxonomy VTN will net be ported to D7 and beyond? Has anyone found alternatives? Or maybe figured out an advanced View that is able to mimic Taxonomy VTN to some degree?
