I searched and found two new modules listed as compatable with 5.x and attempted to install them.
The first was Articles, the second was Book Review.

When I looked for these modules in the modules section of the admin, I found that they were not listed, but there were check boxes where they would have been (I did these one at a time to see if it wasn't just a funny module causing the problem and got the same result). So I checked the boxes, again one at a time to see what happened.

Book review shows up under Create Content, but not under the Content Management admin. When I click on it in Create Content, it says Page not Found.
As far as the other module, it appears to have not added or changed anything at all. I can find no reference to it.

Please note I am a raw newbie testing this out so I could very easily have broken something myself.

I had the same problem (I think). I wanted to install the CiviCRM module. So after dropping the folder into my modules directory, I went to enable the module. Under "Other", there was a blank entry with a checkbox, but no text with module name or description. I just checked the checkbox and submitted the form anyway, and it seems to have enabled the module just fine. So I think it's just a matter of the display of the module name/description.

I discovered the reason why this is happening is because the modules in my modules folder did not have .info files to tell drupal their names, descriptions, etc.

If the modules do not have .info files then they cannot be called Drupal 5 compatible. You should file issues with the modules in question.

However, shouldn't the modules page ignore modules that lack .info files? That might be a core bug.
