So here is my site. It in russian, but still i post a link to it here because i want to show how i redesigned the standart marvin_2k theme.
I've rewriten huge part of css of this theme and i also had to make some corrections in the code of the theme itself.
Main idea, as you can see, is css rounded corners. And also i tried to raise the findability of the content and make easier for the users to focus on specific node in the list of nodes on the page.

I tested the site in main browsers, but i assume that i still have some flows in displaying of the site. So all notes on mistaces and disadvantages will be appreciated.

Thank you and concerning the posting of my efforts as new theme, now when you sujested it i'm beggining to think about it. So soon i'll finish all the redesigning work, contact the author of original marvin_2k theme and post the results of my work as separate theme.

I use Drupal 4.4.1 and as i understand the theming system of 4.5.0 version wasn't introduced in that version yet. So i think the answer to your question is no... Unfortunatly.

phptemplate was based off of marvin_2k originally .. so it should be quite simple to maintain it as a template for 4.5

All you need is the set of template, image and css files stored in the right structure.

how extensively did you need to modify the .theme for this template
?
