I am getting following error while installing it on Drupal 7:

Sorry, have been tied up with other things for some time.

Is this still an issue? The error seam to come from the update module and not from smtp, so not sure what this is but the real cause is probably not smtp.

I haven't had time to test how everything stands with the latest in D7 but will do so the coming days as I'm getting back in to things.
