Please take a look at http://drupal.org/project/shortcode, and check if this project is a duplicate of that one. It would be even better to have an improved project that two competing ones :).

Agreed! I didn't find shortcode in my search and haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but note that at least there's one difference as this is a Drupal 7 module and shortcode is currently 6.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention, have you posted there too that there may be an unwitting D7 port? Thanks!
