karens commentedI just tried a clean install of a downloaded Drupal 5.0 RC1 and the CCK 5.x-1.x-dev tarball and it works fine for me, so I can't replicate your problem.
Is this a clean install or an upgrade? What other modules do you have installed? What database and php versions are you running?
Also, last but not least, where are you looking for the tabs? You should be able to go to Content Management >> Content Types and select the 'edit' option on either 'page' or 'story'. When editing the content types you should see the tabs.

TallDavid commentedKaren, thanks for your focused questions. Through a process of elimination, I've determined that the Nodewords aka "Meta tags HEAD" module (http://drupal.org/project/nodewords) is causing the CCK tabs to not be properly displayed.
I'll enter a bug report on the Nodewords module.
Thanks for your help! David

karens commentedI checked the Nodewords queue and see this is now fixed there. Thanks for tracking down the source of this!

bhuddle commentedSo - being new to Drupal - does this happen a lot? You upgrade some small part of your installation, like the "Meta tags HEAD" module above, screws up some other part, like the display of the CCK tabs? Because I actually got the CCK module to work, created a new content type, added some fields, but now the tabs aren't displayed for me to either edit or create the tabs.
Just venting here - I'll got post the question wherever. But its very frustrating. If I monetized the hours I've spent on just very basic drupal stuff, I probably would have been beter off buying some commercial tool to build and manage my web site. I know some people are like the old heathkit enthusiaist, love to build a stereo and save some money and enjoy the handiwork of your own labor, but jeez, I'm one who likes something that can work and is reliable.

yched commentedbhuddle - this issue is more almost 2 years old. So whatever it is you're experiencing is most probably completely unrelated, you'll need to open a separate issue with an actual report if you want anyone to be able to help.
"does this happen a lot? " not exactly a question that can be answered. It happens. You might be interested in the Acquia Drupal distribution.
