See http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/links.html#h-12.1.2

I've written a custom prev/next link module (using book-navigate.tpl.php to output, mwahahaha) for Drupal 7 already, so if Custom Pagers is more likely to be ported to 7, feel free to move this feature request over there.

And if screen-readers don't make use of these links in head (but i think they do), i really don't care.

I'm a little confused by your comment about screen-readers, and why this issue is tagged accessibility.

As far as I am aware, screen-readers do not make use of the prev and next link rels. A screen-reader may, however, allow a user to use the functionality built into a browser that does make use of these features.

I don't think screen readers take advantage of this yet. I do think that they should but that is another matter...
