I have used htmlspecialchars() in my case because check_plain() does not always work properly for me with & symbols.

I believe we should use this as well. I had problems with a " character and onmouseover was making this do \" when this should have been \"')" and even that is confusing. If we could add this into the code base or somehow get a similar function into the code that would be good.
