Providing support for Android Cloud To Device Messaging(Google C2DM servers) or the integration for Messaging Framework .
Android Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) is a service that helps developers send data from servers to their applications on Android devices. The service provides a simple, lightweight mechanism that servers can use to tell mobile applications to contact the server directly, to fetch updated application or user data. The C2DM service handles all aspects of queueing of messages and delivery to the target application running on the target device. One example is Chrome to Phone.
If you did this, more people would save more time.
Thanks in advance for anything you do.

berdirWhile this is a cool idea, it doesn't make much sense because:
You can not send data to your phone. You can only send data to a specific app installed on your phone. Additionally, you are required to log in to your google account to get a token to which you can send. This is not possible because when exactly would a recipient do that? You can only send stuff to your own phone.
So, it makes no sense to implement this based on cloud to device. Custom Push notifications *can* be done (I've done that myself) but again, that requires custom code specific for the given client application. No official android app (And there is no point in doing that), no official integration for Privatemsg.

zhongguo999999 commentedNote: The following thinking that I have to come up with has to be based on a consumer-to-goole(C2G) model, rather than site-to-goole(S2G) model.
I understand what you say. there seems to be little chance that Google will grant such a request If your module base on site-to-goole(S2G) model, because no official android app which you say above.
If your feels like it is lacking the power that you want and the motivation that you need, sometimes all you have to do is shift your point of view. If you do that, the rest is just pretty much a coast downhill.
I has always been an optimist about the prospects for the integration with Device Messaging(Google C2DM servers) if your module base on consumer-to-goole(C2G) model, just like the solution of Chrome to Phone. you don't requires the official approval. you just simulate the solution of Chrome to Phone and offer your servers to your customers with similar push messages, which can push the url of the message to customer's Android phone. Btw: Chrome to Phone is a open source project.
Here the workflow of my ideas about the new module:
1. The new sub-privatemsg module only is a emulator of Chrome to Phone;
2. I(admin) enable the new sub-privatemsg module in the website;
3. A user(concumer) registered on my website can configure the parameters with his google account,etc, just like configuring the Chrome Browser. His google account parameters will be stored in my website DB;
4. If(when) the user has a new privatemsg message, the module can trap it and remember its url and send the url to the C2DM server, just like the users to send links from their Chrome desktop browser by clicking the send button;
5. C2DM server can send a notification to the user's mobile applications. Note: The mobile has configured with the user's google account already;
6. The user's mobile have a notification about the url of the message. So the user know that he has a new private message. And he can connect my website directly, to fetch the user privatemsg message or data”.
I want you establish a platform(module) in the drupal for people to send their messages. it will be using around the world.
Thank you in advance. I am looking forward to your good news.

berdirWell, there is already http://drupal.org/project/c2dm.
Whatever is going to happen, I'm not going to add custom integration to Android Cloud to Device, if at all, there would be integration with the mentioned project, likely through notifications/messaging.

zhongguo999999 commentedOK, thank you.

shushu commentedhttp://drupal.org/project/gcm is ready for integration with different modules, including privatemsg.
zhongguo, still interested ?
Comment #6
zhongguo999999 commentedThank Shushu.
I am very interested in the concept of providing json by privatemsg module or no gap between services module and privatemsg module.

shushu commentedHi,
just wanted to let you know I am working on it, and it seems that implementing an integration between GCM and privatemsg is not too complicated.
Hope to make it alive on a demo site as soon as possible, and of course share the solution with you.
Regards,
Shushu

haagendazs commentedHi guys. Just came across this post and wanted to let you know that I integrated the Push Notifications module with PrivateMSG. Besides Google Cloud Messaging, it also supports Cloud 2 Device Messaging as well as the Apple Push Notification Service.

shushu commentedHi Daniel,
Cool !
I think "coopetition" in open source is not a bad thing, it just gives more options to the user :-)
Would you like to move thsi issue under the push notification project and just close it ?
I guess it will take few more weeks till I finish my implementation of Privatemsg...

Shushu

haagendazs commentedHi Shushu: I think your comment was intended for me, although my name is not David.
I guess "coopetition" is not a bad thing, however it's not the Drupal way of developing modules, see http://drupal.org/developing/modules:
I'm not quite sure why you didn't provide a patch for the existing module. Obviously, you're entitled to whatever you want to do on here, but since you pretty much started off with a copy of the Push Notification module, could you please:
Thanks!

shushu commentedSorry, David for the name mistake.
Yes, I used the push notification as a basis to the GCM module, and in the beginning I wanted to make it a patch and try to continue from there. Sorry that I didn't properly change all of the references. I will do it as soon as possible.
The reason for not creating a patch and trying to keep everything in the same module is because the changes were too significant and the focus I try to make in the GCM, as I see it, is different.
I know the Drupal "policy" and for a fact I actually terminated at least one of my modules in the past once the features I had in it were integrated in other modules. I believe that making clear and simple choices for the Drupal site developer is important and for sure confusing users with multiple and similar modules can harm the community.

Shushu

shushu commentedzhongguo, sorry for the late response, but I believe now we are ready to provide a good and flexible solution for privatemsg integration with mobile (==Android) devices.
We just released http://demo.mobile4social.com/, which is a site and an app that provides the Privatemsg experience on Android. While it is a working example, it is still just a proof-of-concept, so it might not look perfect.
We hope this solution will be useful for you and for others, and like before, we will be happy to provide you your own branded Android application for your needs, based on this solution.
The Drupal modules that build the solution are aready available, and you can read a bit more about them in http://demo.mobile4social.com/content/Privatemsg
We will be happy to get as many feedbacks as possible, and to make our solution better together.

zhongguo999999 commentedShushu, sorry for the late response, I am very interested in the module, but I had no idea how to do it.
1. I enabled these module: Services modules, Services views module, Views Rules module, Things module, Rules modules, Google Cloud Messaging module, devel module, entity module, entityreference module, features module, privatemsg module.
2. Set the related parameters(Project ID and GCM API Key) in admin/config/workflow/gcm/settings.
3. Please tell me. what should I do next? I also need a guide on how to use it.
Plus I also need a app that will be installed to my android phone, because downloaded app(play.google.com) has a error when I enter the IP(192.168.1.1) on the setup page.
Thank you in advance.
