I've been looking at Drupal, along with Wordpress and Textpattern, for making a website for my church.

I really think that Drupal will be the best solution for the long run especially since the church is growing extremely fast. But I wanted to get some suggestions.

Here's the needs for the site:
-Event Management (+ a sidebar for upcoming events)
-Podcasting (for Audio and Video) Capabilities w/ Streaming
-Image and Video Galaries
-Posts with Inline Images
-A news section

Also things like uploading images and podcasting, etc need to be fairly simple. AND there needs to be access rights so that contributors/ authors can't get into the meat of the backend and screw things up.

What kind of modules would be needed to do this? How much coding in PHP would be needed (not very good with this)?

Any suggestions/ comments would be greatly helpful.

Thanks!

We're doing something like this at http://bethlehem-church.org with Drupal. We've got the church set up with a team of 4 administrators and 6-8 content contributors/editors (without administrative permissions). Take a look and feel free to ask questions.

Most of the stuff you're talking about comes built-in to Drupal out of the box. You'd want to install image.module and event.module, but everything else should be pretty easy.

How would you go about theming the event module to fit the theme of the rest of the site....

Running// Mac OS X 10.4.8 // PHP 5.2.0 // MySQL 4.1.21 // Apache 1.3.33 //

You could change the css very easily.. or you could find the theme_ functions in event.module if you need to do more than that. The web developer module for firefox is a wonderful tool.

I am currently investigating Drupal for a Church website and it seems like it can easily handle everything the prospective client would want to do. Do think you might be able to shed some light on how drupal can handle the following?

1. Scrolling marquee on home page for last minute changes, cancellations?
2. Photos that fade in and out on home page? Let's say an embedded swf gallery that I make?

Also, if the Church is looking to communicate via email to its members, is it possible to pre-load a list of email addresses for the newsletter?

Thanks for any feedback
