Would it be possible to allow users control over who can attach nodes to their own nodes? My idea would be this: give users a choice over levels of permission. Either let everybody add children, let the owner only add, or let nobody add whatsoever. I don't know what this would take, so sorry if this sounds unrealistic.

Thanks!

Let's call this a duplicate of http://drupal.org/node/92552 and continue discussion over there. There should probably be a separate "node relativity" permission for attaching nodes.

This isn't the same issue, though. That one concerns letting users create relatives, period. Mine is more of a luxury than a core feature: letting the user who creates the parent node decide if other users can create relatives or not.

For instance, if a user makes a node type "book," for holding their own stories on a site. If they don't want other users to be able to add stories to that book, they choose an option that denies others the right to add on to that node. Or IS that what the other was saying? It sounded more like a problem with actually giving permissions in general.
