Here's a patch that converts the version 1.18 to the drupal 5 API. Others seem to have done similar things. I cleaned up some of that code. This module does not need renaming to in_line afaik..

and here's the additional but mandatory inline.info file, which you'll need to make the module appear in the V5 api...
