Ajax rebuild doesn't work from the field edit page

From node add/edit, the form gets rebuilt correctly (doesn't matter whether it's CSV or adding rows/columns).
However, when editing the field, rebuilding the form just returns blank content, so the whole section just disappears.
I'm not sure what's the cause behind this.
