Drupal 5.0 -- Compare and Contrast with 4.7?
Acert93 - December 25, 2006 - 21:14
I have been reading tidbits here and there on version 5.0 and have notived some themes and modules being ported over, so it seems like the official release is on the horizons.
Maybe I am missing it, but is there some sort of documentation about what is planned for version 5.0 and the benefits of migrating? Maybe someone could point me in this direction--I am ALWAYS curious in the direction and roadmap for Drupal. A Roadmap link on the homepage or manual would be really nice :)
Anyhow, I am sure there is information on this somewhere on the forums (hard to narrow down such a search and get the info you want), so can someone point me (or share!) what to expect from Drupal 5.0?

There is the CHANGELOG.txt,
There is the CHANGELOG.txt, of course. There is also Dries' initial announcement (http://drupal.org/drupal-5.0-beta1):
Personally, I think the three most essential additions were:
- User defined content types
- Access control improvements
- Official javascript support.
And the most important usability improvements:
- Installer
- Garland theme
- Reorganization of the administration menu and module grouping (with dependencies etc).
Thanks
Sounds great :) Nice to see even more work being put into Drupal's UI. I think it works well now (I also like the control panel module), but it has a learning curve for new users. I am hoping one of these updates that forum gets some serious work or there is some official login sharing/basic feature support for a forum like SMF (i.e. fairly secure, and actively maintained).
Better than that:
And if you actually want to understand what’s in the ChangeLog, there’s Steven Peck’s annotated version. ;-)
Wow, very nice
Steven did a great job describing everything--that is exactly what I was looking for. The Drupal team has been very, very busy. Looks like a GREAT release. I am certain I will be migrating my sites over as soon as the code is stable/full release :)
