Do you have public files enabled and your files directory working correctly? You can check this in admin/logs/status.

I had it set to private files (as the installer indicates that Drupal provides access control). I guess I do not understand what this does. I changed it, and it works now, but I think that it needs to be made more clear in the installation screen ("Some features will not work if this is set to 'private'"). :-)
