I'm about to set up 4 or 5 Drupal sites that I will run (I'm reviving a few blogs, helping out a musician friend and another friend w/ a small business).

I can set up, say, 5 accounts at SiteGround all for $25 a month, which seems reasonable, but would it be better to run them all off 1 drupal install / 1 database?

My goals:

- spend as little as possible
- do as little technical setup as possible (SiteGround has 1-click install, I can add modules etc. etc.)

Any advice welcome!

For 5 domains take business account under 1and1.com for $10 per month.
If you speak german then take www.costorama.com for 2.5 euro per month.

Both providers very quick, first one has shell access and more space.

With a VPS you can usually host as many domains as you want with a single plan and you also get root access. Seems like this might be good for what you are planning. I really like my provider Hub.org where plans start at 11.99 (Canadian $) per month and the management is super-helpful. It's not fancy, though. You have total control but it comes without frills like Cpanel and the like. They're happy to install anything for you.

I have also heard good things about RIMU Hosting where plans start at 19.95, but I am not a customer.

A non-VPS provider that comes highly recommended is Media Temple's Grid Server plan for 20/month. Again, haven't tried them, but they have been recommended by a lot of trustworthy sources.

Full disclosure -- of the above the only host with which I have any experience is Hub.org. If you sign up I get a very small amount taken off my already very small monthly fee. I would recommend them regardless for developer types who are comfortable working largely from the command line which, presumably, is most of the folks here.

Get a small reseller account- for ~$14/month and then you can host many separate accounts. If you are expecting these to be low traffic sites, VPS will be overkill.

Also, don't use 1-click install (e.g. Fantastico) unless you want pain and suffering later. see: http://drupal.org/forum/fantastico-de-luxe

It's about having the technical benefit of a private server (root access, independence) with the cost benefit of sharing.

On re-reading the original post, I don't think VPS is a good fit in this case, mainly because the original poster said they wanted to keep it really simple. But I recommend it for other folks, particularly if they have other interests and needs (like Plone and Java, for instance) that are not widely supported by shared hosting services.

Take Dreamhost, for $70per year you get:
unlimited domains
unlimited sub-domains, etc
very nice support
200GB - Disk Space
2000GB - Bandwidth per months
did I mention very nice support
Anyway, I was very suprised that they were that good when I joined them.

P.S. If you get someone to refer you then you can get a $50 discount.
They cost $10/month, times 12 months equals $120, and if you are refered, you get $50 discount so $120-$50=$70. Bargain, right. If you want to me as referal, at sign-up, in the promo code box, type "MONKEY50DOLLARS" and you'll get your $50 discount.

By using the PROMO CODE best90discount you can get $90 discount with Dreamhost, so it's around $30 a year for a plan.

I recommend it.

Recenly I quit a cooperation with a client. All of a sudden I had 12 domains to be hosted somewhere else. After looking around I stumbled upon Servage. I have had that hosting company in my favorites a very long time! And now as I visited them I saw all features I knew I needed.

The URL: http://www.servage.net/?coupon=cust27949
Keep the extra coupon code and (any) new user gets 25 GB extra storage for as long as he stays a customer! (ps: I will get it too, so it is a good deal).

Benefits on Servage:

  • 2100 GB per month (70 gb per day)
  • 250 (+25) GB for your site(s) and databases
  • unlimited databases, unlimited email boxes and aliasses, unlimited domainds and subdomains
  • DNS included. Intuitive interface for that! Does all you can think of, even *@domain.com to 'catch' non existing subdomain names
  • one domain for free
  • price: 75 euro per year (paypal accepted)
  • super quick access after the setup
  • fast support, and VERY VERY kind. (I myself cannot talk with them, they are too kind imho)
  • mailing lists
  • auto installers for Joomla, BBlog, WordPress, Drupal (YES: Drupal of course !! ), PHPFusiion, Postnuke, phpBB, OSCommerce, ZenCart, OpenBook, Gallery V2, DokuWiki etc etc I see at least 1 new auto installable program per week! I love that myself!

You can add scrips to the crontab. How ever: it MUST be a script. Like php or CGI. You cannot call system binaries.

Database backup can be done online. Click twice and it is done.

Please look for yourself. I have had problems in November '06 as I had over 400000 hits in a day. They just suspended my sites (it was almost 23:50 so it was only 10 minutes) and there after I changed some banner exchanges to get fewer hits. No problems ever after. And they offered me I could split in 2 accounts and even KEEP the 25 GB extra if I use my own coupon code. Cool!

Servage now offers 250GB + 25GB with coupon code: "promo25gb" (i.e. 275GB total and increases every day ... something like gmail ;) ) and 2100GB Monthly Data transfer rate.
Cost is $7.50 / £5.25 per month. VERY VERY COMPETITIVE. Don't know anyone who beats that.

    http://www.servage.net/?coupon=promo25gb

Also, unlike some other famous hosting companies, they do not expose you to unlimited bandwidth charges (i.e. there is overage protection).

HIGHLY recommended .. I read many good reviews on the web.

i took your advice and gave you a month hosting but i am having problems with the new themes

any theme that is not buddle with drupal does not show up.

when i look in the theme section there is no thumbnails and when i set it to default as the downloaded theme the site goes completely text.

is anyone having this problem with SERVAGE.net

Beware of this if you are about to sign on.

there is no live support / phone

    only email.

    andydev’s picture

I have been using servage for a while, and it works great.
Their support is not live, but they respond very quickly.

I've also installed plenty of themes to theme out, and they work great.

Hope you fix your problems ;)

Can anyone advise which is the Best Hosting company in terms of Server Resources (for Drupal)-Not necessarily Price for a Shared server.

I am using Siteground (shared) and very often get the blue screen (I think Server 500 error) The site is temporarily not accessible, pl try later.

Is this Grid Server v Shared Server just marketing or does it make any difference.

    cirtexhosting.com’s picture

Seems like a lot of spam going on here ;)
I would recommend any hosts with budget shared hosting packages with "Multiple Domain Hosting" features
cPanel would be my personal choice of course ;)
