HDI create a structured home page?

I.e. 5 or 6 sub-sections that each lists a flow of content through the site, like 'blogs', 'news' etc.

"sounds" like you need the panels.module.
you might even need the views.module and its "daughter" mdoule views_bonus.module.

you're thinking (?):

- use panels to create the section structure

I would think so but I'd be partially guessing (fairly new). Haven't come across anything else that seems appropriate on my travels thus far.

Other modules you may find useful:
- 'nodequeue' for putting nodes in different queues (manually)
- 'actions' for doing this automatically.
