the monthly archive concept is a new topic for me

what are the advantages of a monthly archive?

does it reduce memory requirements and server load?

I have a website that is hitting 526mb and I am looking for ways to improve performance

This is a display and navigation thing, reporting nodes in month-sized chunks. It doesn't ACTUALLY archive anything.
