Is it possible to use a custom field in an argument?

What I'm trying to do is provide an argument and use this to match against the value of a custom field? I know I can match an argument against a taxonomy term, but I'm wanting to match against the custom field content instead rather than having to populate a taxonomy term or do I have to go the taxonomy route?

Maybe you already tried, but this should be possible.
If this still is an issue, where are you "failing" maybe I can help out.
Please be very specifiek, if possible deliver some screenshots

Click the little "+" symbol next to the Arguments section of the View builder screen, that will show you a list of all the fields and other possible arguments.

Not in Drupal 7... Seemingly randomly changed 'arguments' to 'contextual filters', under the advanced tab.
