Proposal:
"jQuery 1.1 January 14th", "there will be a compatibility plugin"
Postpone(!) Drupal 5.0 release until:
- Release a Drupal 5.RCj:
-- includes: jQuery 1.1, with: jQuery 1.0 compatibility plugin
- Drupal.org has been running said Drupal 5.RCj for >= one week
- Release a Drupal 5.RCj+1
- Release resulting Drupal 5.0 two days later...

* jQuery 1.1a January 7th - A quick alpha release to help everyone test their code and get it moved over to the upcoming 1.1 release.
* jQuery 1.1 January 14th - This will be the official release, to coincide with jQuery’s 1 year anniversary.
.
It’s important to note that jQuery 1.1 will not be backwards compatible with 1.0.
.
Update: ... there will be a compatibility plugin that’ll help you transition over to jQuery 1.1.
Rationale/Benefit:
1. - Avoid Relearning and Recoding/Reworking
jQuery 1.0 -> 1.1 for not-yet-written (new)
Drupal 5.x plugins intended also for Drupal 6.x.
2. - Allow already written (legacy) Drupal 5.x plugins,
using jQuery 1.0, to still be compatible with Drupal 5.x
while they transition to jQuery 1.1.
I'm not a developer (yet?), so I really have no business
joining in on the discussion of this, but I look forward
to watching from the peanut gallery,
and patiently waiting for a Drupal 5.0 release
that includes jQuery 1.1, with: jQuery 1.0 compatibility plugin.
Thank you,
Eddie Maddox

ChrisKennedy commentedIt is simply too late in the release cycle for this feature request to be included, especially considering that jQuery 1.1 hasn't even been released yet.

John Resig hints at a more Shallow Learning Curve for jQuery 1.1:

A lot of this is being done to help reduce the magnitude of methods that are included in the jQuery API. Having 70+ less entries will significantly reduce the size of the documentation, along with making it easier to maintain and read.
Chris, if practicalities make it too difficult to do this for 5.x, either sooner or later, Ok. But the sooner we can, the sooner this world will be just that much more better a place, especially for the Drupal Dojo types, which will likely include me, too!
Thank you,
Eddie

Eddie-1 commentedChanged Issue Title: added ", perhaps"
I leave it to others to determine the advisability of including any backwards compatibility plugin for jQuery 1.1. Such backwards compatibility may very well be, well, backwards! Perhaps including it, but defaulted to "Off", is best.
Thank you,
Eddie

mfer commentedjQuery 1.1.3 is expected out in the next few days (fingers crossed).

We should try to get this into core. Maybe start porting our js based on 1.1.2... or wait a few days???
