The port to Drupal 7 is definitely on the roadmap. We don't have an exact estimate yet as we're a bit short on resources at the moment.

Not sure how much this would help but I ran this through the automated upgrade tool. This would definitely be a first step in the right direction to port the module.

Starting next month we'll be updating the module to support HTML5, followed by an update to Drupal 7.

We have numerous other projects as well as development of the JW Player itself to manage. It's been a case of available resources which should be resolved next month.

@LongTail Video: A while ago I sent you a message on which Cameron Waeland replied. In that message I proposed merging work I did on a JW Player field module with this module. I've created a sandbox of my work so far so you can estimate wether or not our modules can be merged or not.

the only single reason why I didn't move to Drupal 7 yet is that I can't use JW-Player yet. And the reason why I didn't buy a license yet because I can't put the player to productive use. I understand there are many things to do on the development side (even for the player itself) ...but all this has been on the "roadmap" for such a long time now...it would be fabulous to get a time estimate to be able to decide if I should abandon JWP or not.

Just a quick update. Development has begun on the JW Player 5.6 and HTML5 support version of the module. This should be completed in the next week or two. After this we'll start setting our sights on the Drupal 7 port.

@skilip,

I'll take a look at the sandbox once the JW Player 5.6 update is completed.

@skilip I took a brief look at your D7 code and the implementation is excellent. JW Player should be a implemented as a file field formatter. I'm presently working as part of a development team that plans to tackle video in 2-3 weeks time. The roadmap is use JW Player or FlowPlayer as a field formatter on files uploaded via file field. In addition there are plans to use Media module for managing video assets and Media Gallery / Styles for creating mixed galleries of photos and videos. We'd like to use your work and contribute back to the community as much as possible. File handling is a very exciting space in D7 and JW Player could be a big part of the problem space.

@LongTail Video I recommend taking a look at skillip's code and the Media project sooner than later. Field API, File API, Stream Wrappers and the Media project are some of the largest changes in Drupal 7 and likely mean that it is time to take a fresh look at the JW Player module and how it fits into the picture.

Now that the HTML5 update has been released we'll be taking a deeper look at Drupal 7. We don't want to miss the boat. :)

We're interested in merging with skilip's field implementation so we'll be reviewing that sometime this week.

I'm redeveloping a gaming site, and need a player with an age gate plugin, and as far as I'm concerned, this is the best option out there, period. Really appreciate the work, Long Tail!

@LongTail Video Thank you for the update. Have you taken a look at http://drupal.org/sandbox/skilip/1143300? It is a different approach but is much more in line with how most would like to use JW Player in D7 (my opinion of course but based on much experience). It could be worthwhile to start from this work rather than the D6 module.

Letting you know that yes, this is what seems to be the right direction. I dropped it in my personal sandbox and, aside from a little bit of buggy AJAX stuff on the upload, everything worked very, very nicely. Good work! I'll try and make some patches for the module (if necessary) as we are probably going to try and use this on a production site very soon.

@LongTailVideo Glad that you're on board! I have commit access to the sandbox and should start making commits in the next week or so. Also see Lullabot's custom JW module for Videola at https://github.com/Lullabot/videola/tree/master/modules/custom/jwplayer. Lullabot's approach is very similar. I'd really like to merge all of this work together into a new "best of breed" JW Player module. I'd be happy to bring the work into this project, perhaps as a new branch. Alternately it could be worth starting fresh at drupal.org/project/jwplayer or drupal.org/project/jw_player. "jwplayermodule" a redundant namespace for a module so now would be a good time to change that. :)

I can't help but think this JWPlayer feature:

...almost deprecates this particular module (for someone that knows somewhat what they are doing anyways). Think about what you can do with just Views and a simple Video field!

@mpoplin would you care to elaborate how the new feature deprecates this module?

I need my users to be able to "create" new videos by uploading them and then we'll display them using JW Player. So I need a custom field type which is what this module seems to provide. How would you see and views solving this issue?

If you just let the D7 file field handle the actual storage and retrieval of the videos, you can create a persistent Javascript file that formats the video data that Views provides when it sees the necessary JSON object hanging out in the document object (in my case anyways). In fact I just launched a site yesterday for an enormous client doing exactly that... I'd be glad to share the code I used to do this with too.

I realize that it doesn't make the module 'obsolete' in a strict sense because not everyone is a programmer (and I said that in my previous post) but an intermediate Drupal developer should not have a problem making JWPlayer work with a couple hours of tinkering.

The company I'm with licensed JW player for some other projects and with some new D7 sites in the pipe, hoping this module gets ported fairly soon. Though, looks like @LongTail_Video has been dormant the last 2 months. Anyone know of another, field based, video solution?

All: for Drupal 7 please check out http://drupal.org/project/jw_player. The sandbox discussed above is now a full project with a dev tarball available. I've spoken to Long Trail in the past and there is no short term plan to port this project. If/when resources become available this may happen, but the port may just end up being enhancements to the new module to ensure feature parity with what is here now. (@LongTail Video, correct if wrong)

Please help move this new module towards a full release by testing, adding features requests and submitting patches. More feedback and help = a shorter time period to a solid release.

Yes, @rickvug is correct.

It's really a question of bandwidth on our end. Currently, my availability for Drupal development is limited to maintenance updates to our Drupal 6 module. However, this shouldn't always be the case and in the future it's our intent to work more closely with @rickvug to make an official fully featured module for Drupal 7 (The name of his module probably gives this away slightly :)).
