I see the main Simplenews module is in the process of getting ported to D7. Are there plans to release a D7 version of this module also? Thanks.

We're working hard on Simplenews side and moving fast towards a stable release.

Simplenews has now Simplenews Scheduler.
In combination with a view (e.g. views insert token or a views reference field), i think you're able to build the functionality of Simplenews Digest.
