Only seems to add stylesheets from a custom or base theme.

Looks like $theme_path global seems to return the base theme. It does not work that way in 6.

As a zen sub themer, this one is a must. Would love to take advantage of this.

There's an issue here: http://drupal.org/node/1005202 explaining that $theme_path global does not always point to the active theme.
