I'm posting this simply to see if anyone has any advice with regards to the technical requirements I would need on a dedicated server to run some large Drupal sites. I need to move onto a dedicated platform but am not sure of the requirements I would need. I have lots of development experience but very little experience on the server side so anything is appreciated.

Basically, I have a multisite install of Drupal with 6 websites running from it, all for the same company but with subdivisions. The traffic ranges between 40GB - 60GB per month. The install is very module heavy, with views, cck and many other resource hungry modules running, which means the PHP memory limit is up at 2GB. The site has 10,000+ nodes and maybe 8,000 users and is growing by around 200 users per month. The multisite install will over the course of the year attain another 6 websites on top of the 6 it already runs.

Ideally, I would like to be able to migrate my other websites onto my server too. I have another 10 or so separate Drupal websites that I would like to put on there as well, which are far smaller and less traffic and resource intensive.

The real questions are - would I be able to host all of this on one server, and what kind of specs (CPU, RAM etc) would a dedicated server need if it was (able) to handle this?

One thing that might be worth considering:

Doing a VPS through Linode instead of doing a true dedicated machine. The reason I suggest this is that you can start with a lower tier server and then scale up to the next level with only like 15 minutes of total downtime. Really, it's pretty sweet.

Plus, once you build a distribution you like, you can save it and deploy it to other servers in just a matter of minutes.

They also make it really easy for you to add additional VPS's so it is really simple to move from a single server to a webserver and a database server. Or to throw a load balancer in the mix.

You can do similar at some other hosts, but Linode makes it really simple.

I know you mentioned a dedicated, but I bring the idea up because I am just about to drop the dedicated machine I have in favor of Linode... It is just so much more easy to scale.

Hey,

Where do you host this heavy drupal multihosting installation ?
Why I am asking it.
If you have VPS or dedicated server, I can check it and tell you dedic tech requirements.
