I moved away from Drupal about a year ago, Drupal 7 wasn't out yet, but I thought I remembered them talking about how a lot of the common modules would be integrated with it, especially CCK.

I'm looking to give it another shot now, came back and saw Drupal 7 was available now, but looks like CCK is still a separate module? Or am I misunderstanding and it is integrated?

Most of CCK has moved to core in the Drupal 7 version. The D7 version of the contrib CCK package currently contains: […]

The following features are now handled by separate, dedicated projects: […]

So if you start a new site with Drupal 7, usually you don't need the CCK module anymore, because most of the functionality is in core now.
