Your response will help shape the future of the Drupal business ecosystem.'Slideshow' shows as a display option when adding images to a pane as do the normal field slideshow settings. However, only two of these settings are passed to the panels_pane database table under the serialized configuration field (image_style and image_link). As a result a default slideshow is always displayed and configuring the field slideshow settings via panels has no effect.

bbeanz commentedIn my case I have a node with a text field and an image field (with unlimited images allowed). Having installed Panels (and Ctools) I use it to set-up a node display page layout with two-columns and add my node text field to the left pane and my node image field to the right pane.
On placing the node image field I'm offered the choice of how I want it displayed - image or (Field) Slideshow - I choose 'Slideshow'. Now I get the options to set standard field slideshow parameters and 'save' them.
However, as previously stated only two of these parameters are ever stored in the database and I believe that this causes the field slideshow to be display with default settings regardless of what was set-up during the configuration above (eg. if I set image style to thumbnail the slideshow will still display images at their original dimensions, if I set a pager to be displayed it won't be).
I really enjoy using Field Slideshow and I also like Panels a lot - would be great if they could play nicely together.
