then the display settles down to the way it is meant to be. Is there something that I have set incorrectly? Does anyone else see this same behaviour?

Yes, this is normal, even for the non-Drupal version of Views Nivo Slider (known just as Nivo Slider).

Refer here as an example - http://www.creativecmsdesigns.com.au/examples/ddrepairs/ .

Effectively, the images are being loaded, and jquery/css then kicks in and tidies everything up.
