I'm willing to share my experience on implementing views_plugin_query. Not sure where to start though.

We could create a new page in the drupal documentation, put this in advanced_help, start a group ...

Any suggestions on this would be welcome!

Something in advanced_help is probably the best to do.

It would be really helpful to have some kind of good documentation for this new flexible system.

Perhaps this page could link some examples as well.

This patch adds a page "Implementing a views query plugin" in the advanced help of views and includes the basic document structure. This patch is still incomplete, but I'm uploading it here anyway so you can make suggestions.
