Hi,
I'm trying drupal 5 on a subdirectory, but could not install because:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function filter_xss_bad_protocol() in /web/includes/common.inc on line 837
when I call
http://www.domainname.com/web/install.php?profile=default
to follow provider limits I had to remove .htaccess file, but this was not a problem in previous version. I set php.ini as requested in htaccess by hand.
Any ideas?

just re-published and solved the problem, very likely ftp publication error

In my case I just had to publish the drupal files with ftp again and this solved the problem. Probably some errors in prevoius transfers caused this problem.
