I am looking for a mobile development platform for drupal sites. Naturally, my first choice would be a MacBook Pro, with maxed out memory, HD capacity, etc. However, sticker shock sets in whenever I visit the Apple store.
I have been wondering however is the iPad could work as a dev env for MAMP, D6,D7 and FireFox?
Certainly less expensive than a MacBook, but could it work?

It is going to have even less storage so even if you load a MAMP stack on it, it seems doubtful.
Not expecting to major dev work
Wasn't thinking of doing the complete dev cycle on the iPad. got an iMac for that.
Was thing of using the iPad for presenting prototype to clients, with it holding 1 or 2 sites with limited data & graphics.

It will work within the limitations of the browser on the iPad (so no flash for example).

I use my iPad on Drupal stuff, but you'll find it's better for tweaking something when you're traveling than doing full development. The browser is good, and the bluetooth keyboard works. But you'll want a full blown PC with all your software gadgets when you're doing development.

I've got an Ipad engraved with a drupal 10th anniversary logo for sale on Ebay, if anyone wants to test these assertions out. :-)

Hey all,
I've just bought a 3G iPad specifically because I want to work with Drupal sites while I am commuting. I use my laptop sometimes but if I have to stand it is too troublesome on the bus/train, so iPad seemed a great choice to me.
Although it seems to work well for front-end development, I am still trying to figure out whether I can conveniently edit theme and module php files directly on the server via a web interface. I can do it through my hoster's cPanel but I would prefer something with at least syntax highlighting feature, file tree access and easy switch between open files.
I am quite a newbie in both Drupal and iPad, so any ideas would be much appreciated!
php editing on iPad
you can try an iPad app called Gusto that looks something like Coda. i can't speak from experience, as i have neither Gusto nor an iPad. i'd be curious to hear about your experiences if you try using it, as i have been thinking about using an iPad with Gusto for the same purpose.
IDE only or XAMP?
For clarity's sake, are we talking about using it as an IDE or actually running a local webserver on the iPad that's running PHP, MySQL and Drupal on an unjailbroken ipad?
