It will be good to have Gmail style nesting in Forum display, with unread posts being highlighted in some way. If this goes in to the main forum module it will be good, but who else to implement it first than Drupal.org webmasters?

GMail allows each email message to be collapsed or expanded. This feature would be, correct me if I'm wrong, using jQuery to animate each expansion.

What if when you clicked for "1 new comment", all the old comments except the parents of the new comments were collapsed? That would look beautiful on drupal.org.

For a flat display, I also think Gmail's style would be great. For those forums that use threaded discussions, it might be best to imitate Slashdot's comment system.

I'm tempted to 'wont fix' this because it's so old and because the real point is that the forum module, if it remains part of core, should ultimately be completely redesigned.
