I would like to display the attached view on a separate page, accessed by a local tasks tab. The only difference between this and normal Views page display is that this would be a tab on a particular node.

Then you don't want to use views_attach. Core Views' "Page" display type handles that just fine. You need to set the menu configuration for the view to show up as a non-default tab at node/%/yourtab.
