New to Drupal- block and menu behavior confusing

Hi!

I'm a new Drupal user and excited to be trying it. I have successfully installed and connected to my database and am able to make many of the changes I've attempted so far, however I have run into a problem.

Using the democratica theme, I created 2 new menus, 'Priority Campaigns' and 'sitenav'. Each has five menu items.

In the blocks menu, the 'sitenav' block will not appear in the header when I specify it. If I specify right-sidebar, it will appear but only below a search box that isn't supposed to be there (not checked in themes configuration, global or democratica).

Now, since I can't get either menu to show up where I specify, never mind how I want them to look, I have disabled those two menu blocks in the blocks menu. However, each of the menu items from those two menus does appear above the navigation menu. If I do show the blocks, then all of the new menu items are displayed twice, once in the navigation menu and another time in each of the respective new menus.

Also, once I do get the menus to appear where they should, how do I get the menu names not to appear cornily atop each menu?
