#1084288: profile upgrade ? leads me to think this project could be more clear about how Build Kit can be extended to quickly create a Drupal distro.

How can we make it easier for people to get up and running fast?

For the start, i'd suggest adding a note to the project page on extending, with a link to README ?
And the REAMDE could have a link to your example - https://github.com/sprice/simple/

Does this issue need to remain open?

I think the README.txt file has some clear and concise info regarding extending Build Kit and the Simple project reference works as a good model.
