When the new changes for creating menu items for content were being added to Drupal 7, Webchick commented that the ability to set the default value of the 'Provide a menu link' would be a welcome patch.

It doesn't seem that this was addressed in that issue, nor that it made it into core. I've looked through the issue queue but can't find anything about it. Is this still being discussed?
